Shell premieres at Manchester film festival
Shell is gender transitioning. Elder sister Jess doesn't want that to happen at all. Reunited by their grandmother's death, the pair are faced with each other's life choices.
Shell is written and directed by Sam Brain and produced by Joanna Vymeris, Susie Hunt and Val Novakovic. The film stars Alex Brain and Emma Breschi and premieres at BAFTA qualifying Manchester film festival.

Gossip tour launches on International Women’s Day 2025
Launching on International Women’s Day, the Gossip Tour brings the powerful historical short film directed by Hannah Renton and produced by Joanna Vymeris to audiences across East Anglia this Spring.
Taking the story back to the communities whose history it reflects, the tour will feature screenings, Q&As, and live folk music in cinemas, museums, bookshops, and galleries across the region. Sparking conversation on women’s history, solidarity and resistance, the film reclaims the untold stories of so-called ‘witches’—midwives, healers, and women of knowledge and power. Gossip will be screening at Stowmarket regal (Stowmarket), The Nose (Walton on the Naze), Sudbury Quay Theatre (Sudbury), Suffolk archives (Ipswich), Moyses Hall (Bury St Edmunds), The East Anglian Folklore Centre (Colchester) and The Holloway (Norwich).

Shikaku-no-Hana wraps in Kyoto
Joanna was selected to participate in the Kyoto Filmmakers lab 2024 a director on one of the two outcomes of the lab. Filmmakers were brought from around the world by KFL, the Museum of Kyoto and Toei Studios to experience training in jigaideki and to make films in this style. Joanna was the director of the Toei team and directed Shikaku-no-Hana (The Assassin’s Flower) on the Toei open set with support from the Toei staff.

Winner of 2024 Bridges to industry - BBC Film + NFTS
The National Film and Television School (NFTS) and BBC Film are pleased to announce dark comedy Bland as the latest project selected for their Bridge to Industry short film scheme. The film will be written and directed by NFTS Documentary MA graduate Hugh Clegg, based on the eponymous novel by Will Rigby and produced by NFTS Producing MA graduate Joanna Vymeris.
The NFTS filmmakers will receive creative support from BBC Film’s development executives, Alice Ojha and Anu Henriques, who will serve as Executive Producers, alongside NFTS Executive Producer Venetia Hawkes. The film is being financed by BBC Film, and it is intended the film will be showcased on BBC iPlayer following a festival run.
BBC Film’s Alice Ojha and Anu Henriques commented: “We’re thrilled to be continuing our partnership with the NFTS for the eighth year, and to be working with Hugh and Joanna to realise their vision of a bold, darkly comic and ultimately deeply relatable film about loneliness and connection.”
